This Majestic African Merman King is the ninth painting in my Mer-Series, and my first Merman. When researching kings for this painting, I noticed that they frequently had someone carrying an umbrella for them to shield them from the sun. I loved that image and decided to have a bird carrying my king's umbrella for him. In addition, an African Hoopoe has come to rest on his tail. This large, colorful bird is said to be a symbol of a loyal friend or good visitor. Animals frequently show up in my Mer-Paintings, because I feel like they would want to know the Mer-People, just as we would like to know them! In the Yoruba Culture, this king of the ocean is known as Olokun.
I am a Water Artist, a Light Worker, and a Believer in the Magic of Love. My paintings depict Water Spirits... Mermaids, Mermen, Gods, Goddesses, Spirit Guides, Protectors and Swimmers. I work in acrylic and fine art paper on Ampersand Claybord, with my direction coming from dreams and meditation. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and then moved to Los Angeles, where I studied at the Otis Art Institute. Although I've traveled both nationally and internationally, what makes me the most proud is to call Los Angeles home for over thirty six years.
